Wine Companion combines original educational writing with openly reusable public data. This page records the sources, licenses, required credits, and material transformations behind our maps and regional profiles.

Germany

Regional vineyard and grape statistics

Destatis GENESIS table 41252-0002 supplies the 2025 vineyard area, grape hectares, and regional percentages used in German profile questions. Aggregate rows are excluded and percentages are calculated from the published regional totals.

German wine-region boundaries

The 13 educational wine-region shapes are derived from the official BKG thematic GeoPDF from November 2014. Its vector features were grouped by official region, simplified, reprojected, and converted into SVG paths. They are suitable for country-scale learning, not legal parcel boundaries.

Germany country outline

The country context outline comes from BKG VG5000 with reference date 1 January 2025. It was filtered to Germany, reprojected, and rounded for efficient SVG display.

Deutsches Weininstitut pages were consulted to verify facts for Gutedel and Domina. No DWI prose or photography is redistributed: the bilingual teaching text is original and the quantitative figures come from Destatis.

Austria

DAC geometry and regional statistics

Statistik Austria municipality geometry dated 1 January 2025 is used to construct the selectable DAC areas defined in Austrian wine law. The source polygons are dissolved, simplified, reprojected, and converted to SVG. Published agricultural tables provide the attributed regional statistics.

Lower Austria cadastral boundaries

Land Niederösterreich's cadastral-municipality boundaries are used to construct the selectable Ortswein origins within eight Level 3 teaching packs. Statutory cadastral selectors are dissolved, simplified with topology preservation, projected, and converted to SVG paths.

Austria country overview

The federal-state overview uses Natural Earth Admin 1 data, version 5.1.1. Austrian features are filtered, projected, and converted into the overview SVG.

Styrian boundary reference

The Mur centreline from OpenStreetMap relation 59792 helps assign municipalities on either side of the river for the approximate Styrian educational shapes.

France

French AOC geographic areas

The 12 broad French regions and 32 currently selectable Level 2 sectors are derived from official INAO AOC geographic areas. Selected polygons are grouped, dissolved, simplified, and projected for teaching; they are not legal parcel boundaries.

The metropolitan France overview uses Natural Earth Admin 0 data, version 5.1.2. Overseas components are excluded and the outline is simplified and projected for the quiz map.

The 20 Italian regional contexts and 109 currently selectable province-equivalent Level 2 areas use Istat's official generalized 2026 administrative boundaries. They are simplified, reprojected, and converted to SVG for teaching.

Spanish protected-origin wine areas

Ninety of Spain's 106 current protected wine origins use MAPA's official geographic areas. Source features are dissolved by official name, simplified, projected, and separated into unambiguous quiz packs. Sixteen newer origins are not present in the downloaded geometry snapshot.

Portuguese wine-region hierarchy and map-source status

Official hierarchy facts come from IVV Aviso no. 175/2022 and are independently verified against the European Commission's eAmbrosia register. The existing IVV-derived boundary shapes have no verified open-data licence and remain a legal-review blocker for commercial redistribution.

United States

US state boundaries

The national overview and state context maps use the US Census Bureau's 2025 Cartographic Boundary File for states at 1:5,000,000. All 34 states containing an established AVA are selectable as educational Level 1 contexts; shapes are simplified, projected, and converted to SVG for country- and state-scale learning.

Established American Viticultural Area boundaries

Selectable AVA shapes come from TTB's official AVAs Production service. Established features are selected by official name and state; overlapping parent and nested AVAs are kept out of the same matching round. The controlling legal descriptions remain those in 27 CFR part 9.

California grape acreage profile

The California 2024 Grape Acreage Report provides statewide wine-grape totals, color totals, and variety acreage used in profile questions. Acres are converted to hectares and regional shares are calculated from the published statewide total.

Washington vineyard acreage profile

USDA NASS's Washington Vineyard Acreage Report 2017 supplies statewide wine-grape, color, and variety acreage. Acres are converted to hectares and percentages are calculated from the published total.

Oregon planted acreage and leading variety

The Oregon Blue Book's 2022 wine-industry figures supply total planted acreage and identify Pinot Noir as 60% of planted acreage. Only those published figures are used; no unsupported state variety breakdown is inferred.

British Columbia geographical indications

The official British Columbia GI names come from section 56 of the Wines of Marked Quality Regulation. Wine Companion normalizes the nine main GIs as children of British Columbia for teaching; no provincial or BC Wine Authority maps, photographs, or page prose are copied.

British Columbia regional grape acreage

The 2022 BC Wine Grape Acreage Report supplies the factual variety acres used for Similkameen Valley, Fraser Valley, and Vancouver Island profile questions. Wine Companion converts acres to hectares and calculates regional percentages; no report design, charts, or prose are redistributed. No explicit open-data licence was found.

British Columbia learning boundaries

OpenStreetMap administrative and geographic features provide approximate learning shapes for three British Columbia GIs. They are not regulatory GI boundaries, and the official authority cartography is not traced or redistributed.

Georgia

Viticultural regions and subzones

Georgia's National Wine Agency supplies the canonical six-region and twelve-subzone hierarchy. Wine Companion transcribes the geographic facts and writes original bilingual teaching content; no Agency map artwork or boundary geometry is copied.

Australia

Australian wine geographical indications

Wine Australia's official GI register and ArcGIS layers supply the Zone → Region hierarchy and reusable boundary geometry. Features are filtered, simplified, reprojected, and converted into selectable SVG teaching maps.

New Zealand

New Zealand geographical indications

The IPONZ register and New Zealand Winegrowers establish the canonical GI nesting and teaching names. No explicit licence for adapting the applicant-supplied GI maps was verified, so Level 2 boundaries are not redistributed.

Argentina

Argentine origins and teaching regions

The Instituto Nacional de Vitivinicultura and Wines of Argentina supply protected-origin facts and the six-region teaching framework. Only factual names and groupings are transcribed; source map artwork is not copied.

Natural Earth Admin 1 version 5.1.1 supplies province boundaries. Macro-regions are explicit unions of their listed provinces; the shapes show administrative teaching context, not planted vineyard footprints.

Chile

Official Chilean viticultural zoning

Article 1 of current Decreto 464 supplies the six viticultural regions and eighteen subregions. Wine Companion transcribes the legal geographic definitions and does not copy SAG map assets.

South Africa

Wine of Origin production areas

The February 2026 SAWIS register supplies the complete factual hierarchy of geographical units, regions, districts, and wards. No explicit redistribution licence was verified for the official legal boundary assets, so Level 2 Wine of Origin polygons are not copied or approximated.

South African geographical-unit context

The introductory map uses licensed geoBoundaries Admin 1 province geometry for seven non-overlapping province-scale geographical units. It deliberately does not present municipal boundaries as legal Wine of Origin districts.

Romania

Official Romanian viticultural hierarchy

The consolidated annex to MADR Order 1,205/2018 supplies the current eight viticultural regions, 37 podgorii, 48 independent viticultural centres, and 131 contained centres. Wine Companion transcribes only factual identities and parent links; locality rows are not promoted into separate origins, and no official map asset is copied.

Romanian national vineyard area

ONVPV's report of OIV 2024 figures provides the country-level total of 187,000 hectares under vine, including 8,179 hectares of table grapes. It does not provide same-geography regional grape shares, so Romania Profile Check is qualitative only and does not display regional hectare or percentage values.

Accuracy and updates

Map shapes are simplified for teaching and performance. They are not cadastral or legal boundaries. Retrieval dates, feature mappings, scripts, and reproducible transformations are maintained in the repository provenance documentation and are reviewed whenever a dataset is updated.
